So you’ve had a concussion? Following the initial 48 hours of rest and limited activity it’s important to follow these 4 steps for concussion recovery. They have a structured approach to ensure effective management and a safe return to normal activities.
1: Gradual Reintroduction of Light Activity
- Light Activities Only: After resting, slowly reintroduce light activities, such as gentle walking or simple household tasks, provided they do not worsen symptoms.
- Monitor and Adjust: If symptoms return or intensify, scale back activity and consult your healthcare provider for guidance.
2: Develop a Personalised Rehabilitation Plan
- Professional Guidance: Collaborate with a healthcare provider to create a tailored rehabilitation plan. This should involve a gradual increase in both physical and mental tasks based on your recovery.
- Team Support: Recovery may involve input from physiotherapists, neuropsychologists, or occupational therapists.
3: Cognitive and Physical Gradual Exercises
- Cognitive Exercises: Ease into activities like reading, writing, or using a computer, starting with short sessions and increasing gradually.
- Physical Activity: Incorporate light aerobic exercise, such as walking or cycling, but avoid high-impact activities that could cause further injury.
4: Returning to Normal Activities
- Stepwise Approach: Follow a structured protocol for returning to work, school, or sport, ensuring progression is gradual and supervised.
- Medical Clearance: Before resuming high-risk activities, seek approval from a qualified healthcare provider to confirm readiness.
